Musings #52

A child can escape into fairy tale –

the handsome prince on bent knee

begs the maiden’s hand.

But time ticks down –

the quarterback takes one.

That joint set

between tibia and femur,

its cap a bone –

all the surrounding ligaments

and tendons that hold it

in place and tracking,

stiffen and creak, wear out.

The body tells our secrets.

And so these knees

– like sharp-edged will –

are stubborn, resist kneeling.

But like the tiger’s crouch

and the doe brought low, buckling –

life brings us to them,

stiff-spined though we go.
